Louis George-Batier was born in Bourgoin-Jallieu (Isère, France) into a family of tradespeople.
Nothing predestined his future as a sailor or seascape painter. Living so near to the Grenobloises Alpes he was attracted and became a keen mountaineer at a very early age.
He was 20 when he first set eyes on the sea, and it was only some time later at 35 having read a book by Bernard Moitessier that he made his decision.
Lyon, he studied wood carving with Maitre Odin, and later he went on to study drawing and charcoal sketching with Maitre Lapenderie who taught at the Art school.
The sea and art, his two aspirations, were put to one side for several years in order for him to devote his time to various different commercial activities and to the setting up a company. He sold the latter in 1972 to enable him to consecrate himself totally to his new passion: the sea.
He acquired his first big boat in the year 65, “Iroise” an old 10 metre JI in which he ploughed the Mediterranean and acquired his experience. It was with his friend and counsellor, Brenard Moitessier that he built the “Pierre-Louis” a 15 metre rigged steel sailing ketch of the same type as that of the “Joshua”. Having become a fully fledged experienced sailor he took part in the 1973/4 very first round the world “Whitbread” race with a crew aboard the Italian sailing boat the “Tauranga”.
On his return he felt himself ready to embark his whole family aboard and start his voyage around the globe. Over the 15 years that this voyage was to take him, he covered virtually all the seas of the globe.
